Get Moving with Aerobic & Cardio Fitness Activities

Exercises that help your heart stay fit are called aerobic exercises. They help:

  • Keep your heart in shape
  • Lose weight
  • Reduce stress
  • Prevent disease
  • Help you live longer and healthier

Sitting on the couch with a remote in your hand won't help you live longer, and it certainly won't help you get fit. In addition to eating healthy, you’ve got to get moving with aerobic exercise. What's that? Any activity that raises your heart rate above normal is considered aerobic. It's necessary not just to help you fit into a pair of jeans or a miniskirt, but it helps reduce stress, prevent disease and it keeps your heart healthy.

So, how do you start? You should get an OK from your doctor first to begin any workout routine. Then, think about what you enjoy doing. Some feel comfortable in the gym, where one can run or walk on a treadmill, ride a stationary bike or join a fitness class or two. These are all good choices. But, remember to think outside the box so you don’t get bored.

Other ideas:

  • On a nice day, take a brisk walk outdoors.
  • Play a sport you enjoy. Maybe basketball, tennis or swimming?
  • Always take the stairs instead of the elevators.
  • Train and run that 5K you’ve been thinking about.
  • Take dancing classes – salsa can burn a lot of calories.

The key: Find something you like to do and try to do it three to five times a week for at least 30 minutes daily. Download this "Track Your Fitness" chart and get moving today!
